TELEVISION CRITICS ASSOCIATION AWARDS CELEBRATE 25TH ANNIVERSARY

HBO Leads With Three Awards

AUGUST 1, 2009, LOS ANGELES — The Television Critics Association marked the 25th anniversary of its awards with a ceremony looking back at the history of the organization and its tradition of honoring quality television programs.

HBO led all the networks with three trophies at the Television Critics Association Awards, winning for Outstanding New Program of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Mini-Series & Specials and Outstanding Achievement in News & Information.

The ceremony, staged at The Langham Huntington Hotel & Spa, was introduced by Chelsea Handler, host of E!’s “Chelsea Lately.”

Syfy’s “Battlestar Galactica” was named Program of the Year. CBS series “The Big Bang Theory” won Outstanding Achievement in Comedy. Its star, Jim Parsons, received the Outstanding Individual Achievement in Comedy award. The AMC drama “Mad Men” scored a repeat win for Outstanding Achievement in Drama. Bryan Cranston was honored for Individual Achievement in Drama for his role in AMC’s “Breaking Bad.”

NBC’s “ER” received the Heritage Award, which recognizes a long-standing program that has had a lasting cultural or social impact. Betty White received TCA’s 2009 Career Achievement award.

Other winners included HBO’s “True Blood” (Outstanding New Program), HBO’s “Grey Gardens” (Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Mini-series and Specials), HBO’s “The Alzheimer’s Project” (Outstanding Achievement in News & Information) and Nickelodeon’s “Yo Gabba Gabba” (Outstanding Achievement in Children’s Programming).

The 25th annual TCA Awards were held at The Langham Huntington Hotel & Spa. Founded in 1978, the Television Critics Association is composed of more than 200 reporters and columnists in print media from the United States and Canada.
