2023 TCA Award nominees

LOS ANGELES – (June 30, 2023) – The Television Critics Association (TCA) announced today the nominees for the organization’s 39th Annual TCA Awards.

The 2023 TCA Awards celebrate the best of the best from the 2022-2023 TV season, putting the spotlight on exceptional performances, series, creators, and stars spanning across all genres and platforms. The TCA is comprised of more than 200 professional journalists from the US and Canada, each covering television. TCA members made their nominations based on programming available on broadcast, cable and streaming outlets.

Winners are scheduled to be announced on Monday, August 7.

The TCA presents awards in 14 distinct categories, featuring the newly-announced additions of Outstanding Achievement In Children’s Programming, which recognizes shows catering to children seven years old and under; and Outstanding Achievement In Family Programming, which recognizes shows created for youths from seven years old and up. Additional categories put the spotlight on outstanding achievements in Drama; Comedy; Miniseries; News and Information; Reality; and Variety, Sketch or Talk Shows, among others.

HBO | Max once again leads all nominees for the second consecutive season, with 20 nominations to its credit—including four entrants for the coveted Program Of The Year Award. FX places second with 10, followed by Disney+ and Peacock with nine, PBS/PBS KIDS with seven, and Apple TV+ with six. AMC and Netflix are tied with five nominations each; ABC and Hulu have four; Amazon Freevee, Paramount +, and Showtime earned three; and Bravo, NBC, and Prime Video each have two. Rounding out the list is CBS, Disney Channel, ESPN, MTV, National Geographic, and The Roku Channel, with one apiece.

Fresh off its final season, HBO | Max’s “Succession” shares control of the top spot among series with a pair of newcomers—fellow HBO | Max offering “The Last of Us” and FX dramedy “The Bear”—in a three-way tie with five nominations each. “Succession” and “The Last of Us” will go head-to-head for Individual Achievement In Drama and Outstanding Achievement In Drama; while “The Bear” looks to rival second-year standout “Abbott Elementary,” as it claws its way to Individual Achievement In Comedy and Outstanding Achievement In Comedy. “The Bear” and “The Last of Us” are also up for Outstanding New Program, setting up an exciting showdown for series supremacy as “Succession” goes toe-to-toe with “The Last of Us” and “The Bear” for Program Of The Year.

The trio will face some stiff competition for Program Of The Year, as 2022 winner “Abbott Elementary” looks to make the Honor Roll once again—defending its title against a stacked field of challengers that includes AMC’s beloved legal epic “Better Call Saul,” the Disney+ Star Wars spinoff “Andor,” Peacock’s captivating new crime caper “Poker Face,” and HBO | Max’s sharp anthology “The White Lotus'' and side splitting sibling rivalry “The Other Two.”

Elsewhere, Harrison Ford heads up an all-star Individual Achievement In Comedy category featuring Bill Hader, Natasha Lyonne, and James Marsden, among others. AMC’s “Interview with the Vampire” stakes its claim for Outstanding New Program and Outstanding Achievement in Drama. Surreal hits “The Rehearsal” and “Jury Duty” try to out-awkward each other for Outstanding Achievement In Reality alongside new and returning shows such as “The Traitors” and “Top Chef.” Musical odysseys “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” and “Daisy Jones & The Six” rock Outstanding Achievement In Movies, Miniseries Or Specials. Three-time category winner “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” tries to reclaim its crown from reigning champ “I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson.” “Frontline” aims for its ninth win in Outstanding Achievement In News And Information; and Disney dominates the inaugural Outstanding Achievement In Family Programming with five nominations.

“The 2023 nominees for the TCA Awards boast an eclectic lineup from across the entertainment spectrum,” said Melanie McFarland, TCA President and TV Critic for Salon.com. “This season truly had something for everyone—from innovative comedies and gripping dramas, to immersive documentaries and refreshingly cerebral storytelling set in a galaxy far, far away. I am eager to see which stars and series our members have chosen to honor when the winners are revealed.”
