LOS ANGELES, CA – May 31, 2018 – The Television Critics Association (TCA) announced today that Robin Thede, the star of the hit BET late night series The Rundown with Robin Thede, will serve as emcee for the upcoming 34TH Annual TCA Awards, on Saturday, August 4, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. As host, Thede will open the festivities with a monologue that promises to be thoughtful, hilarious, and completely uncensored, setting the table before the TCA’s own members take the stage to reveal the year’s big winners as selected by the organization’s roster of top critics from the U.S. and Canada.

Thede is the critically acclaimed creator, executive producer, and host of The Rundown with Robin Thede on BET, where she entertains viewers with her sharp commentary, biting sketches, and side-splitting parodies as she skewers the latest news and developments in pop culture and politics. Within its first few episodes, the series was already being hailed on several notable Top 10 lists by respected outlets such as DeadlineThe Hollywood Reporter, and Vulture, among many others. Thede entered the history books in 2015 when she became the first female African-American head writer in late night, helming the Comedy Central series The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, on which she frequently appeared; and again in 2016, when she earned the distinction of being the first African-American woman to serve as head writer for that year’s White House Correspondents Dinner.

“Outside of #Beychella, nothing has excited me more than hosting this year’s TCA Awards! After all, if a burnt turnip can be president, why can’t I host this incredible show? I look forward to the event and can’t wait to body roll my way into every critic’s heart,” said Thede.

“In less than a year, Robin Thede and The Rundown have become an indispensable voice in late night television, offering insight and advocacy,” said Dan Fienberg, TCA President and The Hollywood Reporter TV Critic. “From politics to popular culture, her perspective is fearless, hilarious and unique, while her energy and dance moves are second to none. The TCA is proud to have her on board as we honor the best that television has to offer and celebrate 34 years of the TCA Awards.”

Thede initially built a name for herself as head writer on The Queen Latifah Show, as well as writing for the sitcom The Real Husbands Of Hollywood, and the FOX sketch series In The Flow With Affion Crockett. Over the course of her career Thede has written for a number of actors and comedians, including Chris Rock, Anthony Anderson, Kevin Hart, Samuel L. Jackson, and Jamie Foxx. She has also served as a writer for a multitude of awards shows, such as MTV Video Music Awards, the BET Awards, UNCF: An Evening Of Stars, and BET Honors. In addition to writing, Thede’s acting resume boasts appearances in films and television shows such as Key & PeeleA Haunted HouseThe Not The White House Correspondents DinnerDifficult People, and Goodwin Games. She was also a frequent contributor to the beloved humor site Funny Or Die, where she was the driving force behind several viral sketches including the now-classic Mike Tyson, Wayne Brady, and Bobby Brown farce Every Little Step.

Thede joins a star-studded club of entertainers who have previously emceed the TCA Awards, including Kristin Chenoweth, James Corden, Terry Crews, Bryan Cranston, Ellen DeGeneres, Conan O’Brien, Drew Carey, Craig Ferguson, Wanda Sykes, the Smothers Brothers, Nick Offerman, Key & Peele and Bob Newhart, among many others.

The TCA Awards proudly honor the top programs that have left an indelible mark on the 2017-2018-television season. The awards span 13 distinct categories highlighting outstanding scripted series, performances, youth programming, reality series, and more. Additionally, the foundation presents the esteemed Heritage Award to one long-standing series that has culturally or socially influenced the fabric of society, as well as a Career Achievement Award granted to a noteworthy individual whose body of work has inspired generations of actors, writers, viewers, and others. TCA members nominate and vote on awards as an organization, and the process is not open to solicitation or submissions. Nominees will be announced in early June.
